Finding out more about Infused
Oils and a Simple Recipe to Try
An infused oil is a carrier oil that has been infused with at
least one herb. An advantage of the infused oil over the carrier oil
is that it contains therapeutic elements of the carrier oil and the
herbs that permeated into the oil. When an essential oils is not
possible for a certain type of plant, the herb from the plant may be
infused with a carrier oil and the herb may then be used for
aromatherapy. Infused oils are not as concentrated as essential oils
and they usually have an oily feeling to them. Infused oils can also
become rancid. For these reasons, they are not as popular as
essential oils. Note the information regarding safety regarding the
herbs you select to use in your infused oil.
A simple method of making an infused oil is to use a crock pot with
a low heat setting. It is important that the infused oil be heated
gently, so your crock pot should not overheat the oil. Therefore,
don't use a crock pot with only one heat setting because it is
likely to overheat the oil.
First of all, make sure that your crock pot is extremely clean. Put
2 ounces of the carrier oil of your choice along with 1/2 to 2/3
ounce of dried herbs. If you prefer to use fresh herbs, you will
need to double the amount of herbs that you use. Stir well. Then
turn you crock pot onto the lowest possible heat setting. Heat the
oil for two hours at the lowest heat setting. Stir the oil every 10
to 15 minutes. It is a good idea to set a timer to remind you when
to stir, as the stirring process is very important.
When the oil has been heated in the crock pot for two hours, use
unbleached muslin to gently and thoroughly strain the oil. (You may
purchase unbleached muslin at fabric stores.)
The oil should be strained at least twice because if any herbs are
remaining in the infused oil, the oil may go rancid.
