Diffusing Essential Oil Methods 4

Methods for Diffusing Essential Oils 4

Electric Heat Diffusers are comparable to fan diffusers in that they use heat and a fan to gradually heat the oil, then disperse the fragrance into the room. Advantages of this method include the dispersement of the aroma to larger areas, depending on the brand and style, and they can more efficiently disperse the aromas of thicker oils, including patchouli and sandalwood. Disadvantages include the heat could change or destroy certain constituents of the oils and thereby diminish any therapeutic benefits.

Nebulizers are a types of diffusers that will take the essentials oils and break them down into individual molecules, then disperses the smaller molecules throughout the room. Theses types of diffusers are beneficial because they have greater therapeutic value than most diffusers in that the smaller molecules that are dispersed from them are more readily absorbed by the lungs. The nebulizers are quite small (approximately 8" x 4" x 6") and they contain two main parts: the plastic base containing the motor and a glass piece that looks like a clear blown glass device that holds the oils. Some nebulizers use a special bottle instead of the glass piece. The advantages of this method include their capacity to provide greater therapeutic benefits than other diffusers because they break down the oils into small molecules. However, disadvantages include their breakable glass piece which is costly to replace. It is also quite time consuming to clean the glass between each usage. Also with most nebulizers the thicker oils such as patchouli and sandalwood cannot be used because they may clog some of the nebulizers.

Do not use a food dehydrator for diffusion purposes because it is quite cumbersome for that purpose. However, the more expensive high-end food dehydrators could be used for drying evergreen branches directly in the machine which will create a pleasant aroma throughout the room. You also may be able to place a wet sponge with a few drops of essential oils on it (or some vanilla extract), then place it into the dehydrator. However, follow all instructions and safety precautions and only leave your dehydrator on for a short period of time when using it for this purpose.
