Diffusing Essential Oil Methods

Methods for Diffusing Essential Oils

The process by which the fragrance of natural oils is dispersed throughout a room or area is called diffusion. There are different ways in which essential oils may be diffused. In fact, you probably already have some of the things which are needed to dispense the oils. You may also purchase many different types of diffusers from sellers of aromatherapy products.

Probably the easiest method of diffusion is the simple tissue method. Put 3-4 drops of essential oil on a tissue, then place the tissue next to you. As movement occurs, either by yourself or someone else, you will be able to notice the scent. This method may be used anywhere and at virtually any time. However, the aroma emitted by this method is not as predominant as some of the other methods.

Another method for diffusion is to boil 2 cups of water, pour it into a bow and add as many as 10 drops of oil to the water. However, use less water if you are using oils such as cinnamon, eucalyptus, rosemary, pine or thyme, because these oils may irritate your mucous membranes. These oils may be either energizing or relaxing and can be used day or night. The way this method works is that the steam heats the oils which causes an odor to evaporate into the room. This is a quick method for diffusion, however, the fragrance does not linger very long. Also, the constituents of the oils may be altered by the heat, therefore, the therapeutic benefits may not be as great.

Candle Diffusion is another method you may use. In order to conduct this procedure, light a candle and let it burn for approximately 5 minutes. Then blow out the candle and put 1 drop of essential oil in the melted wax. Do not put the oil on the wick. Then relight the candle. You must utilize great caution if you use this method because essential oils are very flammable. An advantage is that you may use this method anywhere a candle may be used. The greatest disadvantage to this method is the fact that essential oils are flammable so you must use extreme caution. Also, the aroma will not last long and the heat could effect or even destroy certain constituents of the oils, thus reducing the therapeutic benefits.
