More about Essential Oils

Essential oils come from plants via the process of distillation by steam or water from the leaves, stems, flowers, roots or bark. The term essential oils is somewhat misleading because they do not feel oily at all. In fact, most of the essential oils are clear, however, some may be amber colored, such as patchouli, lemongrass or orange. The real essence of the plant is contained in the essential oils, which are extremely concentrated. (A little bit goes a long way.) Perfume or fragrance oils are not the same as essential oils because perfume oils are artificially created and may contain artificial substances, whereas essential oils are obtained from the actual plants.

Psychological and physical therapeutic benefits may be derived from the chemical contents and aroma of essential oils. These benefits may be received by inhaling the essential oils or by application of diluted essential oils to the skin. Note that the essential oils are too pure and too strong to be applied directly to the skin without diluting it with a compatible carrier oil. Some of the carrier oils include sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil and grapeseed oil. The oils may then be applied to the skin where they will be absorbed.

The essential oils are beneficial when inhaled because the oil molecules are absorbed into the bloodstream as they enter the lungs.

You may usually purchase essential oils in small bottles, but make sure you know how to store them properly. The quality and price of essential oils can vary a great deal. The prices may be determined by the actual quality and price of the oil, the rarity of the plant, the origin of the plant, its growing conditions, the standards of the distiller and the amount of oil that may be produced by the plant.

You may also purchase essential oils in the form of several different blends of essential oils. If you purchase oils in this manner, you probably will not need to buy each essential oil separately, which will save you money. The downside to this is that you will not know exactly how much of each oil is blended in, whereas if you mix it yourself, you can control the amount of each essential oil that you blend in with the others.
