Dangers in Essential Oils

Whether it be pure essential oils, organic essential oils or therapeutic grade essential oils, Make sure you're using it properly to avoid dangers

There are some dangers you should be aware of before using essential oils. Those dangers are set forth below.

When burning essential oils, the smoke emitted from them may have certain carcinogens, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

Essential oils are also high in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and should not be used during pregnancy unless your licensed physician specifies that it is safe to do so. Some essential oils, in certain doses, could even cause spontaneous abortions.

Since essential oils quickly absorb into the skin, they should usually not be applied directly. They should be used and applied with plant oils or other carrier oils (fats) such as hazelnut or olive or any of the other oils that are considered "soft" oils.

Among others, Bergamot is one of the pressed essential oils that may cause sunburn because it is a photosensitizer which increases the skin's susceptibility to sunlight.

Many essential oils should be handled with care so industrial users should check with their material safety data sheets (MSDS) to find out the hazards of certain oils, as well as how they should be handled.

Many practitioners of aromatherapy buy organically produced oils because there are concerns about pesticide residues in essential oils.

For purposes of aromatherapy, it is not advisable that essential oils be ingested. However, some oils are used internally for medicinal purposes, but the oils are diluted. Some such oils include dill, anise, star anise, and mint. There are many standards for medicinal oils in Pharmakopoeia. Unless there is a certified essential oil expert or other credited doctor with knowledge in essential oils, they should be avoided for ingestion.

Dosages should be quite low if given to children, as they are especially sensitive to all essential oils such as pure essential oils and aromatherapy essential oils. In fact, some essential oils should never be given to children. Essential oils can be toxic if given to animals, especially cats. Therefore, owners must keep their pets away from essential oils in their homes. Just as any medicine, essential oils should be similarly stored and locked away, out of children's reach.
