Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils: What Oil is Used for What Symptoms

If you're a beginner in uses of essential oils, find out what aromatherapy essential oils are used for. Listed below are some essential oils and their popular uses.

Basil is a common essential oil that is used in perfumes. It is known for its sweet, clean. light spicy fragrance. This oil is believed to have uplifting qualities and enhances concentration; it may also alleviate headaches, including migraines. However, basil oil should not be used during pregnancy due to its chemotypes.

Bergamot is a very popular oil in the perfume industry, but is also used as an insect repellent. Other uses include their positive effects on the urinary and digestive tracts. It is also used to alleviate skin symptoms caused by stress, such as cold sores, and also skin conditions such as chicken pox. It is especially useful for such skin conditions when mixed with eucalyptus oil. However only distilled Bergamot oils may be used topically because cold-pressed Bergamot oils contain a substance called bergaptene which is a strong photo sensitizer when applied to the skin. Earl Grey tea contains Bergamot as one of its flavoring ingredients.

Black pepper contains a sharp spicy fragrance. It stimulates the body, thus promotes circulation. It is also effective for muscle aches and pains. Since it stimulates the circulation it is effective for bruises when applied directly.

Citronella oil is closely related to lemongrass and is used in perfumes. It is also widely used as an effective insect repellant.

Tea tree, eucalyptus, sandalwood oils (as well as other oils) contain external, or topical, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anti-parasitic properties, and are, therefore, used as antiseptics and disinfectants.

Clove oil is often used in dentistry as a topical analgesic. It is also an antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative (cleanser), and antiemetic (preventing nausea or vomiting).

Lavender oil has been widely used throughout the ages in folk medicine. It is used today as an antiseptic and also for its soothing and calming effects.

Yarrow oil may be used for relieving inflammation of the joints and healing cold and flu symptoms.
